Reading Remezov’s Maps for the History of Sea Ice

Abstract This article presents Semen Remezov’s Chorography (atlas of Siberia) as a source built on an extensive information infrastructure and argues that it may hold potential as a source for environmental history, focusing on the example of ice. Because sea ice is seasonal, scientists rely on historical documentary sources to reconstruct its presence in the past. The portrayal of coastal ice in this atlas may lend itself to a partial reconstruction of that history.
