Experimental investigation on the compressive behavior of corrugated steel plate reinforced concrete shear walls

Abstract To ensure the proper interaction between the concrete and steel plate in steel plate reinforced concrete shear wall (SPRSW), shear connectors such as shear studs are commonly used. However, the installation of shear connectors results in complex detailing and is time/labor/resource‐consuming. It is desirable to have an economical SPRSW with simple detailing, better without the need for using shear connectors. This study proposes a new type of stud‐free SPRSW. Seven pairs of specimens were designed and tested under axial compression loading, with design variables of presence or absence of shear studs, plate configuration (flat, trapezoidal corrugated, and rectangular corrugated), and the percentage of openings in the steel plate (25% and 40%). The SPRSW using a trapezoidal corrugated steel plate exhibited the best ductile behavior. The SPRSW using a flat plate with 40% openings gave the maximum compressive strength per unit steel plate volume. The overall results showed that SPRSWs using steel plates with openings exhibited favorable compression performance.
