ABSTRACT Autism is a neurobiological condition that impacts brain development, interfering with the way a person communicates, interacts with others and processes information around them. It is essential that educators, health professionals, family members and others involved in the care and education of people with ASD are well-informed and trained to meet the unique needs of these individuals. The purpose of this article is to analyze and present effective strategies to promote understanding of ASD and improve family acceptance. To achieve this objective, central concepts related to ASD will be addressed, in addition to discussing practices and approaches that favor the inclusion and development of individuals with this condition.
