Zwischen Distanz und Nähe: Stilwandel in deutschen und tschechischen Schul-Briefstellern der ersten Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts

During the Enlightenment, there was a comprehensive change in style in German language culture: the baroque, representative style of writing was replaced by a simpler, more everyday style. This also had an impact on school language textbooks, which can be observed very clearly in instructions for letter writing. At the turn of the 19th century, this change was also reflected in Czech language culture, which can also be seen in school textbooks, especially as such works were often based on German models. This article uses a number of examples to demonstrate this development and at the same time shows that in the first half of the 19th century, traditional and more progressive styles still coexisted in both language areas.

Abstract

During the Enlightenment, there was a comprehensive change in style in German language culture: the baroque, representative style of writing was replaced by a simpler, more everyday style. This also had an impact on school language textbooks, which can be observed very clearly in instructions for letter writing. At the turn of the 19th century, this change was also reflected in Czech language culture, which can also be seen in school textbooks, especially as such works were often based on German models. This article uses a number of examples to demonstrate this development and at the same time shows that in the first half of the 19th century, traditional and more progressive styles still coexisted in both language areas.
