Analytics-Driven BESS Control Mechanism for Congestion Management in Distribution Networks
The proliferation of photovoltaic (PV) systems is on the rise, presenting both environmental benefits and technical challenges within the network infrastructure. The increasing presence of PV installations can lead to issues such as overloaded lines, congestion, and overvoltage. Generally, residential rooftops serve as the mounting area for PV panels, which are linked to the low voltage (LV) distribution network. Consequently, network operators must monitor the maximum hosting capacity (HC) of specific locations or distribution lines to ensure service quality and safety. Exceeding HC levels can result in service interruptions or even stoppage of supply operations. To address these challenges, a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) and a control algorithm are proposed. The study focuses on a practical network scenario, specifically a typical regional suburban network. The objective is to mitigate network disruptions and enhance service quality without resorting to costly grid reinforcements such as line or transformer replacements. Therefore, emphasis is placed on the implementation of novel methods. The study demonstrates how BESS, along with optimized control strategies, can enhance grid services and increase HC based on the obtained results.
