«Urbs in rure». Las «uillae» suburbanas de «Colonia Patricia» entre los siglos I y V
Among the numerous contributions of Rome to the Iberian Peninsula, we must highlight the uillae, in their great typological diversity, as residences of otium of the elites, as models of agricultural exploitation, or both. Colonia Patricia was a city redesigned in the image and likeness of the urbs itself, and, therefore, so were the structures that made up its ager, being able to account for the predilection in this territory for suburban villas as opposed to other typologies. We propose the study of four suburban villas of the city –Cercadilla, Rabanales, Ronda del Marrubial and Santa Rosa–, because they meet a series of requirements on the basis of which we have established their selection. We also analyze their limits and physical link with the city, their connection with the communication routes or their socio-political role, among others, as well as their evolution from the 1st to the 5th century, parallel to the development of the Empire.
