Biofuels for a Green Future: A Pathway to Environmental and Economic Sustainability

Fossil fuels, no doubt have increased the prosperity and improved lifestyle Earth, but being the finite reserves of nature, they are costly and have also played a role in environmental pollution upsurge and health issues. Despite the increasing awareness of climate change, persistent elevated levels of greenhouse gases and other pollutants are observed. Environmental degradation outweighs the fossil fuels’ derived energy. Fossil fuels contribute to global warming by the emission of CO2, whereas biofuels offer carbon neutrality, reduced emission and biodegradability. Biofuels are environmentally friendly as they contain 10-45% oxygen content, and lower sulfur and nitrogen levels, which is unlikely with petroleum-based fuels. However, their sustainability can vary based on the feedstock choices, land-use practices and production methods. The objective of this review is to evaluate biofuel production levels and their potential as sustainable energy sources, with emphasis on their role in mitigating global warming. All four generations of biofuels have been discussed in this article with reference to their respective substrates, the techniques employed, and the final green energy products. The advantages and disadvantages of all four generations of biofuels have also been described. It can be concluded that due to being eco-friendly, biodegradable, cost-effective, and carbon-neutral, biofuels are promising alternate to conventional fossil fuels and can play an important role in the green economy.
