Produced water use feasibility in hydrogen production in Wyoming, United States
I study the feasibility of using produced water, a byproduct of oil and gas production, as a supplement or an alternative to freshwater for production of hydrogen via electrolysis. I investigate the variables required to allow for green hydrogen production using produced water feedstock. I analyze produced water availability and volume in Wyoming and evaluate produced water quality based on salinity levels and contaminants. Green hydrogen production requires renewable energy feedstock; as a result, I analyze renewable energy availability and potential in Wyoming. I map out the renewable resources and produced water resources and investigate the feasibility of green hydrogen production in Wyoming given the considerations. I discuss the economic and regulatory constraints and opportunities required for green hydrogen production in Wyoming.
