The Paintings and Biography Of Wen Tian Xiang : In The Illustration For Five Moral Disciplines & Behavior Of Confucianism

This paper analyzes the illustrations and biographical content of Wen Tianxiang(文天祥), a loyal subject of the Song Dynasty in China, as included in the “The Illustration For Five Moral Disciplines Of Confucianism” compiled by King Jeongjo during the late Joseon Dynasty. The “The Illustration For Five Moral Disciplines Of Confucianism” published in 1797, is a document that corrects and supplements the errors and shortcomings found in King Sejong's “The Illustration For Three Fundamental Principles Of Confucianism” and King Jungjong's “The Illustration For Two Fundamental Principles Of Confucianism” In the original edition, there were several issues with the illustrations and biographical entries of Wen Tianxiang. One such problem was the inconsistency between the content of the biographical articles and the illustrations. This paper reveals how these errors and shortcomings were corrected and supplemented in King Jeongjo's “The Illustration For Five Moral Disciplines Of Confucianism” Until now, research on the “The Illustration For Moral Disciplines Of Confucianism” during the Joseon Dynasty has primarily been conducted in the fields of linguistics, bibliography, art, and education. However, there has been little historical research that meticulously compares and verifies the illustrations and biographical entries of many historical figures included in this book. Therefore, although this study focuses on the illustrations and biography of just one person, Wen Tianxiang, it can serve as a highly useful research model for verifying each of the “The Illustration For Moral Disciplines Of Confucianism” compilations from the Joseon Dynasty. This approach can be applied to the study of other figures included in the “The Illustration For Moral Disciplines Of Confucianism” thereby contributing to enhancing the validity of historical records.
