Exploring Metaphors of International Students’ University Life
This study aimed to explore the metaphors associated with university life among international students and their underlying meanings. Through a qualitative analysis, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight international students, focusing on their perceptions, experiences, and interpretations of university life. The analysis of international students’ narratives identified seven key metaphors representing their university experiences: challenge, journey, test, Americano, growth, puzzle, and carousel. These metaphors encapsulate the diverse and multifaceted nature of international students’ adaptation to university life in South Korea. By examining these metaphorical representations, this study provides a deeper understanding of how international students perceive and experience their university journey. Based on these findings, future research should extend this exploration by analyzing the metaphors of international students who have successfully completed their university education, offering further insights into their overall adaptation process. Additionally, this study underscores the need for developing and validating structured support programs to facilitate international students’ university adaptation and enhance their academic success.
