Robust Super Twisting Sliding Mode Control based Model Predictive Current Control of Totem Pole Bridgeless Boost PFC Converter

This paper proposes a novel control method for a totem pole bridgeless boost power factor correction (PFC) converter that combines robust super twisting sliding mode control (STSMC) in the outer loop with model predictive current control (MPCC) in the inner loop. Boost PFC converters usually target a unity power factor through voltage control in the outer loop and current control in the inner loop in a cascaded structure. Conventionally, proportional-integral (PI) controllers, which are linear controls, have been widely used for voltage control in the outer loop, but suffer from poor robustness under various disturbance conditions. As an alternative, sliding mode control (SMC), a nonlinear control, can be considered. However, SMC is not suitable for voltage control of PFC converters because it is not able to limit the bandwidth. Therefore, STSMC is adopted for the outer loop to improve performance and robustness with a more continuous control method. In addition, we use MPCC for the inner loop, which is a nonlinear control that improves robustness and efficiency through optimal switching. Thus, the proposed method integrates the outer and inner control loops with nonlinear control, which offers many advantages and improved robustness.
