Optimized Active Damping Control for Variable Speed Wind Turbines Drive Train Using PID-State Control
Grid codes require active power and frequency management, as well as inertia support from wind turbines connected to the grid. However, supplemental frequency regulation may result in torsional vibrations in the wind turbine drive train. Thus, this work offers an improved active damping control for variable-speed wind turbine drive trains based on PID-state control. The PID-state control is utilised to optimally damped torsional vibration while requiring minimal control effort. In addition, a state torque estimator with disturbance minimization is used to reduce persistent disturbances. Two simulation scenarios are studied by comparing the process with and without a dampening factor. Furthermore, fixed and varying wind speeds are considered while evaluating the method’s performance.
