Comparison of Predictive Control and State Feedback Control for Matrix Converters
Matrix converters offer significant advantages, including compact size, high efficiency and reliability, making them very suitable for modern electric vehicle and other applications. This paper presents a comparative analysis of two advanced control strategies, Model Predictive Control (MPC) and state feedback control, applied to matrix converters in AC drive systems, in the presence of supply-side harmonics. MPC, known for its multi-objective control capability, manages input and output harmonics via cost function minimization, but demands high computational resources. In contrast, state feedback control, enhanced with observers, provides accurate state estimation, high quality dynamic control and robust harmonic suppression while requiring much less computation. The findings of the paper indicate that state feedback control is superior to MPC with respect to a range of performance criteria, which potentially places it as the preferred control strategy for many applications.
