Fast and Reliable Reconnection in Multi-Peripheral Bluetooth Low Energy-Based Battery Monitoring Systems

Battery monitoring systems are essential for ensuring the safety and efficiency of battery storage systems. A wireless implementation using the Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE) offers advantages, including low power consumption, cost-effectiveness, and easy maintenance. However, wireless communication also poses various challenges, such as connection interruptions, communication delays, and packet loss, especially in multipathrich environments. In this paper, we investigate the impact of the timing parameters of the BLE central on the reconnection process and on the communication quality with multiple BLE peripherals. We propose a novel scheme for optimizing the timing parameters by setting both the scan interval and scan window to one-third of the connection interval. We conduct experiments using a mock-up battery board and confirm that our method can achieve fast and reliable reconnection in a challenging propagation environment. Experiments using a mock-up battery board demonstrate that reconnection can be completed within 7.54 ms using the proposed timing parameters. Furthermore, in simulations emulating conditions with a high packet error rate on the advertising channels, we confirm that reconnection can be achieved up to 64% faster compared with using regular timing parameters.
