Optimizing The Agricultural Sector As A Pillar Of Regional Economy: A Study On Potential And Financial Access In South Kalimantan

Introduction/Main Objectives: This study examines the potential economic development and financial access schemes in South Kalimantan, focusing on the agricultural sector, particularly rice cultivation. This topic is significant because it addresses the need for sustainable economic growth in the region, highlighting the role of financial services in enhancing agricultural productivity and farmers’ welfare. Background Problems: This study investigates the challenges faced by farmers in accessing financing and overall economic development in South Kalimantan, posing the following research question: How can financial services be optimized to support agricultural development and economic growth in the region?. Novelty: This study presents a unique approach by integrating financial service optimization with agricultural development strategies, an area that has not been thoroughly explored in the context of South Kalimantan. Previous research has often focused on either financial access or agricultural productivity separately, leaving a gap in our understanding of their interconnections. Research Methods: This study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative analysis of economic indicators, such as PDRB and fiscal independence ratios, with qualitative assessments from focus group discussions (FGDs) involving local stakeholders. Data were collected from government reports, financial institutions, and direct interviews with farmers. Findings: The results indicated a significant correlation between improved access to financial services and increased agricultural productivity. This study reveals that targeted financial support, including subsidies and innovative financing models, can enhance farmers' capabilities and contribute to regional economic growth. Conclusion: The research concludes that optimizing financial services is crucial for fostering agricultural development in South Kalimantan. These implications suggest that policymakers should prioritize financial inclusion initiatives tailored to the agricultural sector to achieve sustainable economic growth. The main take-home message was that a synergistic approach involving financial services and agriculture can lead to inclusive and sustainable regional economic development.
