A Study on Configuration Strategy of Inverter-Based Power System
Inverter-based resources (IBRs) are connected to the grid at an unprecedented rate owing to the transition towards renewable generations. However, conventional inverters, operating under grid-following (GFL) mode, do not provide grid regulatory services. To overcome this, some inverters are requested to operate in grid-forming (GFM) mode in replacement of synchronous generators (SGs). This paper aims to investigates the stability issues and placement strategy of inverter in such power systems. We first built a simulation model of a power system comprising two types of inverter control modes. Subsequently, the small-signal model of GFL inverters is derived. Utilizing the Criteria Importance Through Intercriteria Correlation (CRITIC) method, we evaluated the stability performance of different placement topologies and studied the placement strategy. Our findings indicate that an optimal ratio of 1:1 for GFM/GFL inverters and a specific placement strategy enhance system stability and response to disturbances. The study concludes with a guideline for the future design of inverter-based power systems.
