Windshield Wiper Control Compensating Chatter Oscillation Characteristic Based on the Phase Difference Between Left and Right Arms

This paper proposes a windshield wiper control and its design method to reduce chatter oscillation of wiper arms. First, a windshield wiper model including the chatter oscillation characteristics is expressed. The model is described as a three-inertia resonance system. The parameters of the model are identified to realize the dynamics observed with the wiper test rig. A controller to compensate the chatter oscillation characteristic is designed based on H-infinity control theory. This control is implemented on the wiper test rig. Its performance is evaluated in comparison with the conventional control designed by an optimal regulator. The effectiveness of the control is demonstrated by the experimental results in the two kinds of conditions that chatter oscillation is likely and unlikely to occur.
