Sustainable Communities (SDG-11) and Presentation of Heritage in the Malaysian National Film Jogho (1999)

Objective: This study aims to investigate the portrayal of SDG-11 and cultural heritage that was shown in the Malaysian Best Film at the 14th Malaysian Film Festival (FFM) in 1999 titled Jogho. The film's setting within the cultural context of the Malay community in Kelantan, along the southern border of Thailand, is significant, as is its dialogue predominantly in the Kelantanese dialect. However, the FFM's requirement for 70% Malay language raises questions about Jogho's portrayal of cultural heritage and identity. Theoretical Framework: This study examines these themes through Cooke's (1999) framework of culture, focusing on language and cultural heritage within national cinema. Method: The methodology adopted for this research is based on qualitative basic research and content analysis as its tools. Results and Discussion: The findings reveal that Jogho effectively represents the cultural heritage of the Kelantanese Malay community, aligning with national cinema criteria. Furthermore, by addressing poverty and community dynamics, Jogho resonates with Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11), which advocates for inclusive and sustainable communities. Research Implications: The film highlights the socio-economic challenges faced by marginalized groups while preserving their unique cultural identity. Originality/Value: Thus, Jogho serves as a critical reflection of Malay-Kelantan society and contributes to broader discussions on sustainability and cultural preservation within Malaysia’s cinematic landscape.
