Studying the regeneration cycles of nickel-containing catalysts during high temperature gasification and prediction model fitting

The global increase in energy demand, driven by industrialization has urged the need for sustainable energy alternatives. Future projections suggest an enhancement in renewable energy usage, accompanied by a decline in traditional fossil fuel utilization. Biomass conversion technologies, such as thermochemical methods, play a critical role in this transition. High-temperature solutions e.g. gasification ensure efficient conversion and minimize byproduct formation. Materials with improved resistance to degradation during repeated utilization are being investigated to enhance sustainability. Additionally, advancements in energy policies supports the integration of biomass into renewable energy strategies. The biomass based energy systems align with global goals to reduce emissions, improve resource efficiency, and transition toward a sustainable energy future. In this work, the regeneration cycles of four different catalysts were investigated during high temperature catalytic gasification of maize biomass with and without steam. Therefore, the catalysts were impregnated with nickel to enhance the hydrogen production during the gasification process. In order to study the efficiency of each catalysts, their performance was investigated during ten regeneration cycles. Besides their appearance, the composition of gas, the hydrogen-carbon monoxide, carbon monoxide-carbon dioxide ratios and the amount of arisen synthesis gas were analyzed. For further prediction of the composition of gas, machine learning based prediction models were developed and used to characterize catalyst performance after the tenth regeneration cycle. Henceforward, it was noted that zeolite based catalysts gave the best synthesis gas yield with a suitable gas composition, facilitated the increment in H 2 /CO and CO/CO 2 ratios. • Gasification with different Ni-containing catalysts and their regeneration cycle. • Increment in H 2 /CO ratio can be achieved: Ni/Clinop.> Ni/ZSM-5> Ni/CaO > Ni/Al 2 O 3 . • Increment in CO/CO 2 ratio can be achieved: Ni/Clinop.> Ni/ZSM- > Ni/Al 2 O 3 > Ni/CaO. • Prediction model application on the results in order to estimate the composition.
