Family Support in The Elderly With Type II Diabetes Mellitus: Literature Review
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease with increasing prevalence, particularly among the elderly. Family support is considered a crucial factor in managing this disease, particularly in enhancing medication adherence and self-care. This study aims to analyze the role of family support in managing T2DM in elderly patients through a literature review. The method used was a literature review, analyzing articles published in international journals relevant to this topic. The results showed that family support, including both emotional and practical aspects, can improve glycemic control, enhance quality of life, and support medication adherence. However, challenges such as a lack of family knowledge about diabetes and limited access to medical care were identified as barriers. The conclusion of this study is that family support plays a critical role in managing T2DM in the elderly, and there is a need to improve health education for family members to enhance more effective care. Recommendations include the development of educational programs involving family members in diabetes care and integrating family support into long-term care models.
