Preparation of high-purity titanium carbide by carbothermic reduction method

TiC has excellent physical and chemical properties and is widely used in various fields. In this paper, high purity TiC was prepared by carbothermal reduction from TiO2 and graphite powder. The effects of carbon distribution coefficient, raw material ball milling time, sintering temperature, holding time and treatment after ball grinding on the properties of TiC powder were studied under certain conditions. XRD, SEM and Fischer particle size analysis methods were used to analyze the experimental samples. The results showed that the crystallization degree of TiC increased gradually with the increase of carbon blending coefficient of raw materials, and free carbon appeared when the carbon blending coefficient was 0.95. In this group of experiments, the sample quality was the best when the carbon blending coefficient was 0.90. When the milling time of raw material increases to 48h, the diffraction peak of XRD graphite disappears, and the diffraction peak of TiC is the sharpest. In this group, the milling time of 48h is the most suitable. When the temperature is 1850°C and the product is a single TiC, the sintering temperature is 1850°C. When the holding time is increased to 5h, the product is a single TiC. In this group, the quality of TiC prepared at 5h is the best. Then, with the increase of ball milling crushing time, the particle size of titanium carbide decreased gradually, and the crushing time was 48h, and the experimental sample with the smallest particle size was obtained.
