The effects of hydraulic jump on the flow around side weirs
Side weirs are one of the water diversion structures that can be used for different purposes. Hydraulic jumps occurred in the main channel along a side weir under certain flow conditions. In this study, the hydraulic jump formed along a side weir was simulated using the FLOW-3D numerical model. The simulation employed the Volume of Fluid (VOF) method for free surface tracking and the RNG k–[Formula: see text] turbulence model. The numerical model was verified against experimental results, which demonstrated its ability to simulate the hydraulic jump with acceptable accuracy. When a hydraulic jump occurs along the side weir, the longitudinal velocity increases from the upstream region of the side weir to the start of the hydraulic jump. Subsequently, the velocity decreases from the start to the end of the hydraulic jump and then becomes constant downstream. The effect of the upstream Froude number on the flow field characteristics was subsequently examined. As the upstream Froude number increases, the location of the hydraulic jump moves toward the downstream end of the weir, and the initial depth of the hydraulic jump decreases.
