¿QUÉ HICIMOS EN ESPAÑA PARA MEJORAR NÚMERO Y CALIDAD DE LOS TRASPLANTES?
Organ transplantation (Tx) has an impact on global health. Although the number of Tx has in- creased in Spain and the USA, accessibility varies significantly between countries. The evolution of donation and Tx in Spain is analyzed, as well as what has been done to optimize this treatment. Changes in the donor profile are highlighted, with the appearance of donors in asystole and a decrease in donors due to brain death. The rates of organ donation, family refusal to donate and organ exchange between autonomous communities and European countries are exam- ined. Spain has a Tx rate of 122 per million population, with 12-15% of Tx from living donors. Family refusal ranges from 13% to 18%. Renal Tx activity has remained stable, but recipients are increasingly complex, with 47% over 60 years of age. Various strategies were identified to improve the effectiveness of Tx, such as the program for hyperimmunized patients and the use of advanced surgical techniques, cross-over Tx, centers for complex cases, incorporation of orthotopic Tx techniques and robotic Tx. Through these initiatives, it is expected to increase the Tx rate by improving the results in recipients. The 6 strategic lines of the Spanish National Tx Plan are presented to increase the availability of organs and improve access to Tx.
