Morphological leaf growth of sunflower in response to magnetized water and water replacement levels ABSTRACT: The leaf surface is the most important plant structure of sunflowers, and its interaction with factors such as water availability and unconventional irrigation technologies improves the understanding of water use by the crop. The leaf changes of sunflowers when subjected to variable irrigation combined with a magnetic field were evaluated. The study was conducted in a randomized block design greenhouse in a 4 x 2 factorial arrangement with four replications, four water replacements (100, 75, 50 and 25% - RH) and two types of irrigation water (normal and magnetized). The RH was determined using the actual crop evapotranspiration. The average relative growth rate (RA), net assimilation rate (EA), specific leaf area (SA), leaf area index (LAI) and leaf area duration (DA) were evaluated. For all variables, water response functions were adjusted based on RH. Reductions in RA, SA DA, EA, and LAI were observed due to lower water availability, which was caused by the increase in the electrical conductivity of magnetized water. A higher magnetized RH than normal RH is necessary to obtain the highest RA. Highest RH results in high RA, up to the maximum L limits of 7.8 (normal water) and 9.0 (magnetized water). There was an inverse relationship between EA and LAI due to self-shading and reduced photosynthetic efficiency of senescent leaves. SA showed a linear relationship with RH, and DA peaked at 17 days with an RH of 88.30%. Keywords: Helianthus annuus L.; greenhouse; leaf area index.
