Analysis and Design of Energy-Efficient Interleaved DC-DC SEPIC PFC Converter for Onboard EV Charger

This paper investigates the utilization of an Interleaved DC-DC Single Ended Primary Inductance Converter (SEPIC) as a switched mode DC-DC converter aimed to mitigate the input current harmonics in the onboard charger of Electric Vehicles (EVs). High harmonic distortion can negatively impact electric vehicle (EV) battery lifetime through several mechanisms such as (i) increased heat generation, (ii) electromagnetic interference, (iii) increased RMS current, and (iv) non-uniform current distribution. To enhance ripple reduction effectively, this study employs an Interleaved DC-DC SEPIC Power Factor Correction (PFC) converter. The output of the PFC converter is fed to a Bidirectional DC-DC converter for implementing Constant Current (CC)-Constant Voltage (CV) modes of battery charging. The combined effect of PFC and CC/CV results in improved energy efficiency of the onboard charger. This paper implements a control strategy of PFC converter based on hybrid particle swarm optimization grey wolf optimization. The HPSOGWO algorithm is utilized to effectively suppress current harmonics and achieve high tracking accuracy, along with a faster convergence rate. To assess the performance improvement of the HPSOGWO algorithm, a non-parametric statistical analysis method called Kruskal–Wallis one way analysis of variance is employed. The real-time simulation for 1[Formula: see text]kW charger is performed and the experimental results are validated for 200[Formula: see text]W output power using TMS320F28027 processor.
