Design and Implementation of an Off-Site Monitoring and Control System for Smart Tilapia Fishponds
Aquaculture provides a reliable food source and aids in replenishing aquatic species. Among other things, maintaining water quality is crucial for fish health in aquaculture operations. Monitoring water quality and intervening to retain it is a necessity. This paper proposes a system used to monitor and control tilapia fishponds' water quality remotely. Further, the system can override some automatic water quality and feed release functions should the need arise. The proposed system aims to lower the cost of labor in fishpond tending. It is a Wi-Fi-based system using a versatile platform designed for building Internet of Things (IoT). The system performs its monitoring and controlling functions using an application installed in one's smart phone. The prototype can control and monitor fishponds off-site based on the performance tests conducted. Specifically, the system allows the monitoring of the water status by indicating the PH level, temperature, water level, and ammonia content. Further, the mobile application also allows the turning on and off of a few motors or actuators for the water pump, sprinkler, and feeding system.
