Magnetic properties of Sm(Fe,Ga)7C melt-spun ribbons

In this study, the structures and magnetic properties of Sm(Fe,Ga)7C melt-spun ribbons, in this case, SmFe7GaC and SmFe6GaC melt-spun ribbons, were compared with those of SmFe7 melt-spun ribbon. Annealing as-quenched SmFe7 melt-spun ribbon with a metastable SmFe7 phase resulted in the formation of a stable Sm2Fe17 phase. On the other hand, annealing SmFe7GaC and SmFe6GaC melt-spun ribbons with an amorphous phase resulted in the crystallization of the Sm(Fe,Ga)5 phase. Unlike the annealed SmFe7 melt-spun ribbon, the annealed SmFe7GaC and SmFe6GaC melt-spun ribbons exhibited high coercivity. The highest coercivity of 12.6 kOe was achieved in a SmFe6GaC melt-spun ribbon annealed at 1073 K. The origin of the high coercivity in these specimens is believed to be the existence of the Sm(Fe,Ga)5 phase.
