The impact of geographical indications on the valuation and differentiation of coffee

This study analyzes the impact of Geographical Indications (GIs) on the valuation and differentiation of coffee, highlighting how these certifications link product quality to its geographical origin. GIs influence consumer perception and improve market competitiveness by reinforcing the authenticity and territorial identity of coffee. The goal of the research is to understand how GIs affect the coffee production chain, focusing on economic aspects and competitive differentiation. The methodology employed was a narrative literature review, encompassing both theoretical and empirical studies on the subject, including traceability technologies, such as UV and NIR spectroscopy, to ensure the authenticity of certified coffees. The results indicate that GIs add value to the product, allowing certified coffees to position themselves in premium niches in both local and global markets, while also strengthening local economies. It was also identified that sustainable agricultural practices adopted in regions with GIs contribute to the superior quality of coffee. The study concludes that GIs are a strategic tool for differentiation in the global market, promoting the socio-economic development of producing communities and ensuring consumer trust in product quality.
