The association between rs1800790 and rs1800787 variants in fibrinogen beta chain and venous thromboembolism among Arabs
Objectives: Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a complex disease that can be influenced by genetic factors. Fibrinogen is important for hemostasis. The current investigation examined the relationship between polymorphisms of the fibrinogen beta gene (FGB) and VTE risk. Methods: A total of 283 participants volunteered in the study. The rs1800790 (G/A) and rs1800787 (C/T) FGB polymorphisms were examined. Results: The frequencies of minor alleles rs1800790 A and rs1800787 T were 23.8% and 19.3%, respectively. No association was found between the individual polymorphisms tested and VTE. When haplotypes were considered, AC and GT haplotypes were found to reduce the VTE risk (OR = 0.30, 95% CI = 0.17–0.54, and OR = 0.22, 95% CI = 0.11–0.46, respectively, P < 0.01). However, the AT haplotype was found to increase the VTE risk (OR = 2.03, 95% CI = 1.05–3.93, P < 0.05).Conclusion: Haplotypes of FGB gene were found to modify the risk of VTE among Jordanians. Results can be implicated in interventions targeting VTE prevention.
