Where was the picture on the back of the Korean 1,000 won banknote drawn from? - Gyesangseodang or Dosanseodang? -
In 2007, a new Korean 1,000 won banknote was issued. In a currency design briefing before issuing the new bill the Bank of Korea(BOK) said that the picture on the back of it is the Gyeomjae Jeongseon's Gyesangjeonggeodo (溪上靜居圖) depicting Dosanseodang(陶山書堂). Then, there was a counterargument that Gyesangjeonggeodo depicts Gyesangseodang(溪上書堂), not Dosanseodang(陶山書堂). Then the BOK changed its original position to ‘Gyesangjeonggeodo depicting Gyesangseodang’ in the new banknote issuance explanation leaflet. Dosan Seowon Management Office thereupon claimed that it is clear that the picture on the back of the 1,000 won bill is Dosanseodang, not Gyesangseodang announced by the BOK, and asked for clear correction after historical research within the earliest period of time. However, 17 years since the new 1,000 won bill has been issued the controversy still continues over where the picture on the back of the 1,000 won bill was drawn from. This study was to clarify where the Gyesangjeonggeodo on the back of the 1,000 won bill was drawn from between Gyesangseodang and Dosanseodang. First, an attempt was made to find out the relationship between Toegye(退溪) and Jeongseon (鄭敾) through genealogical materials, and the motivation for Jeongseon(鄭敾) to paint the picture was explored. Jeongseon painted this painting in honor of his son Jeong Man-soo's acquisition of a draft for the preface to the Zhujaseojeolyo written by Toegye from his father's maternal family. For this reason, some researchers strongly argue that the Gyesangjeonggeodo was an image of Gyesangseodang in 1558 when Toegye compiled Jujaseojeolyo. Which one of two seodangs, Gyesangseodang and Dosanseodang, was Gyeomjae Jeongseon's Gyesangjeonggeodo on the 1,000 won bill drawn? In order to approach this issue correctly, we are asked to overcome two of Francis Bacon's four idols - the idol of the theater and the idol of the market. Dosanseowon has not a few authorities on Toegye. They argue that the Gyeomsangjeonggeodo on the 1,000 won bill depicts the Gyesangseodang. That is why I said we need to overcome the idol of the theater to get access to the truth about the picture on the 1,000 won bill. The second thing to overcome is the ‘idol of the market’. In other words, we need to sort out the issue with ‘the distortions caused by wording.’ The arguments that Gyesangjeonggeodo is the picture of Gyesangseodang appears plausible on the ground that ‘Gyesangjeonggeodo just depicts Toegye writing Jujaseojeolyo at Gyesangseodang, and the title of the painting is Gyesanjeonggeodo’, But it's not necessorily true. It can be a distortion caused by wording that must be overcome. Through the review of the literature and records left by Toegye, comparison with other paintings of Dosanseowon drawn around the same time as Gyesangjeonggeodo, and filed trips I came to the conclusion that Gyesangjeonggeodo on the 1,000 won bill depicts Dosanseodang. The rationales are : 1. Comparative description of Gyesangseodang and Dosanseodang described in Toegye's Dosanjapyeong(陶山雜詠), 2. Comparative description of Gyesangseodang and Dosanseodang described in Gaseo(家書)(letters kept in Toegye’s family), 3. Comparative analysis of Kim-changseok’s and Kang-sewhang’s Dosando(陶山圖) paintings from the same period, 4. The presence of Woljeong(月艇, moon boat) painted in front of Gokguam(谷口岩), 5. The long interval of about 200 years between the time of drawing of Gyesangjeonggeodo and construction of Gyesangseodang, 6. The general attitude an artist takes when he paints. Where was the picture on the back of the Korean 1,000 won banknote taken from? This controversy is still ongoing. Based on the rationales presented above, I concluded that Gyesangjeonggeodo depicts Dosanseodang, not Gyesangseodang.
