The Experience of Pre-Service Home Economics Teachers in Developing Descriptive and Essay-Type Assessment Items Using Generative AI

This study investigates the experiences of pre-service home economics teachers using ChatGPT to develop essay-type assessment items, focusing on the tool’s effectiveness and limitations. Ten pre-service teachers, after completing a course on essay writing and logic, created assessment items with ChatGPT and participated in follow-up interviews. Qualitative data were analyzed to explore themes in their AI-supported item development experiences. Participants found ChatGPT efficient but noted limitations, such as a lack of depth and difficulty in adapting to individual student contexts. This study highlights ChatGPT’s potential and limitations in assessment development, suggesting a need for precise prompt formulation and teacher collaboration for effective AI utilization.
