Accounting for soil creep in foundation calculations

This article is dedicated to the calculation of building and structure foundation settlements, taking into account the rheological properties of soils, specifically the manifestation of creep. The authors present cases of emergency situations that occurred at different time intervals due to the lack of consideration for the manifestation of rheological properties in the foundation soil in calculation models. The article explains the mechanism underlying the creep process in soils. It describes the main stages of creep development during foundation loading. The authors pay particular attention to analyzing the key factors that significantly influence the rheological properties of soils. Both scientific and normative literature addressing the consideration of rheological properties in foundation calculations are reviewed. The article outlines methods for determining key parameters that describe creep, such as the viscosity coefficient and secondary consolidation coefficient of soils. A review of normative literature that allows for the determination of creep parameters is conducted. An analysis of algorithms for accounting for soil creep in various settlement calculation methodologies is presented. The main differences in settlement calculations considering creep by domestic and foreign authors are analyzed. In conclusion, the authors highlight the advantages of algorithms that describe the manifestation of rheological properties of soils when calculating foundations for buildings and structures erected on clayey soils, compared to algorithms that do not account for the time-dependent deformation process of soil foundations. The authors emphasize the necessity for testing methodologies used to obtain creep parameters for specific soil conditions.
