Theoretical study of housing and electrode stack variations for a Lithium-ion battery cell

Lithium-ion batteries are getting a lot of attention for energy storage to combat the effects of climate change. However, due to its diverse range of applications extending from small electronics equipment to large energy storage systems, its output requirements and limitations vary significantly. Many efforts are underway to increase the power and energy output of the cells without any significant compromise on their size and weight. This paper explores different housing sizes and types for an existing cell by Kokam that is initially enclosed in a pouch bag housing (118 x 97 x 8 mm). Furthermore, variations in the electrode stack are also investigated, including different active materials, thickness in electrode coating, and the total number of anode and cathode sheets. The Pareto front optimization tool is then utilized to pick a cell that gives the optimum results in terms of energy density. The parameter variation of the cells is done in the MATLAB application ISEA Cell and Pack Database (ICPD) created by the Institute of Power Electronics and Electrical Drives (ISEA) of RWTH Aachen University, which virtually builds up the physio-chemical model of the existing cells. This study concludes that the utilization of pouch bag housing, in conjunction with NCO and lithium metal as active materials, results in the high er gravimetric energy density thus enhancing the cell output from 139 Wh/kg to 216 Wh/kg.
