Forest exploitation in the Moldavian ASSR (1924-1940)
The period 1924-1940 was a crucial one for the Moldavian ASSR marked by Soviet policies that had a significant impact on the region’s forestry. Established in 1924 as part of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Socialist Republic, the Moldavian ASSR was subject to a strict regime of exploiting and managing natural resources, including forests. The policies promoted during this period reflect both economic and ideological strategies, with direct consequences for the biodiversity and ecological balance of the region. Soviet policies in the Moldavian ASSR on forest management were mainly oriented towards meeting the economic needs of the Soviet state. In this regard, forests were seen as an essential resource for the timber industry, and construction, but also for the development of agricultural and energy infrastructure. Forest resources were intensively exploited in the context of collectivization and forced industrialization. In addition to the massive cutting down of trees, there were campaigns to clear swamplands to turn them into agricultural land, which led to a significant reduction in forested areas.
