Using the moon to date a beautiful artwork

Abstract This paper uses an interdisciplinary approach combining art and astronomy to determine the likely date of creation for John Moore’s landscape painting ‘Lindisfarne Castle and Abbey, Holy Island, by Moonlight’. By analysing the position of the moon depicted in the work, and comparing it to astronomical data, it is possible to determine that the painting was created at approximately 6:30 am on the 28th of February 1877. Beyond the specific artwork examined, this case study highlights the broader educational value of integrating astronomy and visual arts to engage students and enhance science learning. This interdisciplinary approach has the potential to increase interest in STEM subjects and provide learners with innovative tools for exploring the natural world.
