A Seven Layer Half-Delay MDSC-MSTOGI-EPLL Based Disturbance Rejection Control With Power Levelling Feature for a SPV Array-Battery System

This work presents a control to address power quality concerns and to enable cost-efficient operation of a grid-tied solar photovoltaic (SPV) array driven microgrid with battery energy storage (BES) without additional cost of power electronics. Conventional BES interfaced microgrid controls often require additional power converters, increasing system cost and complexity. Furthermore, disturbances such as harmonics, voltage unbalance, frequency fluctuations, and phase angle jumps in voltages available for loads connected at the point of common coupling (PCC) demean power quality performance and degrade system dynamics. To counter these challenges, this work proposes an advanced disturbance immune control framework using a multiple seven-layer half-fractional delay signal cancellation (MDSC<inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">${}^{2}_{7}$</tex-math></inline-formula>) and a mixed second-third order generalized integrator (MSTOGI) with an enhanced phase-locked loop (EPLL). Control prevents bandwidth attenuation and offers enhanced selective filtering with satisfactory dynamic performance. Control is embedded directly into solar inverter control, providing high disturbance rejection without additional converters. Key contributions include intelligent utilization of BES power leveling for revenue maximization, reliable power conversion with enhanced load harmonics and reactive power compensation, and improved operational flexibility, including nighttime inverter use for increasing system utilization. A rule-based economic power management scheme supports dynamic BES utilization across different operating modes. Simulation and hardware results, along with comparisons, confirm system effectiveness and advantages provided by proposed algorithm.

Abstract

This work presents a control to address power quality concerns and to enable cost-efficient operation of a grid-tied solar photovoltaic (SPV) array driven microgrid with battery energy storage (BES) without additional cost of power electronics. Conventional BES interfaced microgrid controls often require additional power converters, increasing system cost and complexity. Furthermore, disturbances such as harmonics, voltage unbalance, frequency fluctuations, and phase angle jumps in voltages available for loads connected at the point of common coupling (PCC) demean power quality performance and degrade system dynamics. To counter these challenges, this work proposes an advanced disturbance immune control framework using a multiple seven-layer half-fractional delay signal cancellation (MDSC<inline-formula xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink"><tex-math notation="LaTeX">${}^{2}_{7}$</tex-math></inline-formula>) and a mixed second-third order generalized integrator (MSTOGI) with an enhanced phase-locked loop (EPLL). Control prevents bandwidth attenuation and offers enhanced selective filtering with satisfactory dynamic performance. Control is embedded directly into solar inverter control, providing high disturbance rejection without additional converters. Key contributions include intelligent utilization of BES power leveling for revenue maximization, reliable power conversion with enhanced load harmonics and reactive power compensation, and improved operational flexibility, including nighttime inverter use for increasing system utilization. A rule-based economic power management scheme supports dynamic BES utilization across different operating modes. Simulation and hardware results, along with comparisons, confirm system effectiveness and advantages provided by proposed algorithm.
