Toroidal compactifications and Borel-Serre compactifications

We discuss connections of toroidal compactifications and Borel-Serre compactifications in view of the fundamental diagram of extended period domains. We give a complement to a work of Goresky-Tai, and generalize it to the non-classical situation.
