The Compilation and Later Citation Patterns of Daedong-unbugunok as an Encyclopedia

In the atmosphere of the times when the spread of Unseo(韻書) were active among bureaucrats and intellectuals, Kwon Munhae(權文海) read Unbugunok(韻府群玉) for the creation of poetry in preparation for civil service examinations, and also frequently read them while working at government offices in charge of literary affairs such as Sungkyunkwan Hakjeong, Seungmunwon Gyogum, and Yejo-Jwarang. However, the more he encountered Unseo, the more he realized that it was difficult to find knowledge information and historical information about his country, and by organizing articles on history, geography, people, and customs contained in the old literature in the form of Unbugunok over 30 years, a total of 20 Daedong-unbugunok(大東韻府群玉) books could be compiled. However, it is difficult to say that Kwon Munhae had in mind the compilation of Yuseo(類書) from the beginning, as the Daedongunbugunok is written in 11 themes smaller than 30 themes of Unbugunok, and the descriptions are concentrated on items such as geography, famous person, surname, filial piety, and chaste woman. Rather, given that he wrote historical facts that he would be wary of and recommended for later generations based on his confucian historical awareness, Daedong-unbugunok can be evaluated as not only an early form of encyclopedia but also an historical book.
