Temporal Changes in Lower Body Shape Proportions Among Korean Adults
This study analyzed the changes in lower body shapes and their composition ratios across different age groups in Koreans, based on Size Korea data collected from 2004 to 2021. Using lower body measurements, three clusters were identified: waist-dominant, tall, and lower limb-dominant body types. The changes in cluster proportions were then compared across age groups and over time. The analysis revealed that both males and females showed an increasing proportion of waist-dominant body types with age. However, over time, the same age groups demonstrated a decrease in waist-dominant proportions, alongside an increase in lower limb-dominant and tall body types. Notably, males showed a significant upward trend in lower limb-dominant proportions, while females exhibited a simultaneous increase in tall and lower limb-dominant proportions, especially after their 50s. These findings suggest that, over time, age-specific body shapes have shifted toward younger body characteristics. This study offers foundational data for developing tailored products and strategies in apparel, healthcare, and public policy. It highlights the need for further research on body shape changes in individuals aged 70 and above to support aging populations.
