Pharmacological Evaluation Of Medicinal Plant Stem Bark Extracts For Anti-Ulcer Activity In Wistar Rats

Objectives: This study aimed to understand whether Psidium guajava L stem bark extracts have an Anti-ulcer property on Wistar rat. Materials and Methods: The Acetone and ethanol extract of Stem bark of Psidium guajava L was investigated for its anti-ulcer activity against ethanol induced ulcer models and Indomethacin induced ulcer in experimental rats at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg body weight P.O. The data were analysed by one-way ANOVA followed by Tukey’s test for analysis by GraphPad Prism 5.0 and P < 0.05 were taken as significant. Results: The Ethanolic extract of Psidium guajava L of dose 200 mg/kg showed significant (P<0.05) reduction in pH, acidity and ulcer index as compared to control. Conclusion: This present study indicates that Etanolic extract of Psidium guajava L have potential anti- ulcer activity in the ethanol and Indomethacin induced ulcer model. These results may further suggest that the extract was found to possess antiulcerogenic as well as ulcer protective properties, which might be due to its antisecretory activity.
