Mean lifetime measurements of low-lying yrast positive- and negative-parity states of <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><a:mmultiscripts><a:mi>Gd</a:mi><a:mprescripts/><a:none/><a:mn>150</a:mn></a:mmultiscripts></a:math> have been performed with the ROSPHERE array using the <b:math xmlns:b="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><b:mrow><b:mmultiscripts><b:mi>Ce</b:mi><b:mprescripts/><b:none/><b:mn>140</b:mn></b:mmultiscripts><b:mo>(</b:mo><b:mmultiscripts><b:mi mathvariant="normal">C</b:mi><b:mprescripts/><b:none/><b:mn>13</b:mn></b:mmultiscripts></b:mrow><b:mo>,</b:mo><b:mn>3</b:mn><b:mi>n</b:mi></b:math>) fusion-evaporation reaction and the recoil distance Doppler shift method. Precise branching ratios have been obtained from a complementary electron capture decay experiment of both the isomer and ground state of <d:math xmlns:d="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><d:mmultiscripts><d:mi>Tb</d:mi><d:mprescripts/><d:none/><d:mn>150</d:mn></d:mmultiscripts></d:math>. Reduced <e:math xmlns:e="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><e:mrow><e:mi>E</e:mi></e:mrow><e:mn>1</e:mn></e:math>, <f:math xmlns:f="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><f:mrow><f:mi>E</f:mi></f:mrow><f:mn>2</f:mn></f:math>, and <g:math xmlns:g="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML"><g:mrow><g:mi>E</g:mi></g:mrow><g:mn>3</g:mn></g:math> transition probabilities were extracted and compared with the corresponding observables in the neighboring isotopes and isotones. The experimental data are compared to the predictions of various theoretical models: quasiparticle random phase approximation, time-dependent Hartree-Fock calculations, the quadrupole-octupole collective Hamiltonian, the mean-field mapped interacting boson model, and the triaxial projected shell model. We find that a complete description of both quadrupole and octupole collectivity, from ground and excited states, is currently lacking, and such measurements of transition strengths are crucial for constraining present and future calculations.
