IMPROVING THE ANTI-WEAR PROPERTIES OF MOTOR OILS USING CARBON AND METAL-CONTAINING NANOMATERIALS

The results of the application of nano-additives and nanocomposites in M10DM engine oil in order to reduce the wear of tribo-interfaces are considered. Powdered nano-additives were used: carbon-containing (multilayer nanotubes and graphene) boron-containing (hexagonal boron nitride) and metal-containing (copper/zinc). The concentration of nano-additives and nanocomposites in engine oil varied from 0.2 to 0.01% by weight. The introduction of nano-additives into the engine oil was carried out using ultrasonic dispersion. The quality of the nano-additives used was controlled by Raman spectroscopy. Studies of the anti-wear properties of oils in the presence of nanomaterials were carried out on friction machines: a 4-ball friction machine (point contact of a tribo-pair) and a roller-pad friction machine (contact over a nominal area). It was found that the least wear was obtained on a 4-ball friction machine in the presence of a nano-additive of hexagonal boron nitride in M10-DM engine oil. A smaller diameter of the wear spot was obtained in the presence of the Cu-Zn nano-composite. All other composites increase the diameter of the wear spot compared to commercial engine oil. The lowest weight wear of the pad on the roller-pad friction machine occurred when hexagonal boron nitride was introduced into the engine oil (compared with commercial oil, the amount of wear decreased by 57%). In turn, in the presence of nano-additives of multilayer nanotubes and graphene, the amount of wear decreased by 36 and 32%, respectively. Pad wear decreased by 36% when using a nano-composite of hexagonal boron nitride + (Cu-Zn). When compared with commercial engine oil, the wear of the "rollerpad" tribo-coupling decreases for all studied nano-composites. In the case of nano-additives, the wear range is 1.9 -3.0 mg, and for nanocomposites 2.8 -3.7 mg. The research results have shown that nanoadditives and nano-composites in M10DM engine oil contribute to reducing the wear of tribo pairs. The least wear was observed in the three-pair "roller-block". This is due to the formation of an anti-wear film and a decrease in surface roughness.
