Abstract

The footwear sector experienced a remarkable development at the end of the Middle Ages. Chopines were fashionable in all the countries of the Christian West. They were a kind of flip-flop with a sole whose thickness became considerable in the 15th and 16th centuries. This article analyzes the different sources preserved for the study of their manufacture and consumption in Aragon during the transition between the Middle Ages and Modernity. The regulation, learning and practice of the trade, the acquisition of raw materials, trade and the taxation to which they were subject are some of the elements examined to understand the use and significance that these charismatic shoes had.
