Sex and Religion in Counseling: Complex Intersections of Client Beliefs and Values
Abstract This article examines the intersections of sex and religion and provides suggestions for addressing these topics with clients. Potential clinical manifestations due to internal and/or external conflict with sex and religion are identified, as well as individual variations that impact the degree to which a conflict might be experienced. Assessment methods and interventions that may be appropriate for clinical application are proposed. A case example demonstrates the application of assessment and intervention within therapy. Finally, we present future considerations for counselors engaging in therapeutic work around sex and religion.
