Efficient Low-Latency and Traffic Aware Dynamic Bandwidth Allocation for XG-PON

The efficiency of upstream bandwidth utilization in passive optical network (PON), which is a widely used technology in access networks depends heavily on the efficacy of the dynamic bandwidth allocation (DBA) scheme. While the Giga-PON access network (GIANT) DBA was the first international telecommunication union (ITU)-compliant scheme, it suffered from high idle time for optical network units (ONU) and poor bandwidth utilization. The subsequent algorithms, like immediate allocation with colorless grant (IACG), efficientbandwidth utilization (EBU), and comprehensive bandwidth utilization (CBU) aimed to address these problems and resulted in fairly improved bandwidth utilization for 10-Gigabit PON (XG-PON). In order to achieve enhanced performance, we propose a novel DBA scheme, referred to as efficient low-latency and traffic aware (ELTA) DBA by improvising a new strategy for the scheduling and polling mechanisms. The proposed ELTA DBA uses a reallocation algorithm to improve the bandwidth packing while a weighted round-robin (WRR) algorithm is used to reduce the guard bands in frames and provide fairness to ONUs. Exhaustive simulation results demonstrate the improved performance of ELTA DBA compared with the existing DBA schemes for XG-PON.
