Planning modular intralogistic systems in the chemical industry by axiomatic design

Abstract In consideration of the inherent uncertainties and shorter product life cycles in the chemical industry, companies are developing flexible modular production systems. Such systems promise to reduce the time required for planning and facilitate adaptation to market demands. In order to fully realize the potential of modular production systems, it is essential that intralogistic systems possess equivalent flexibility. While preliminary concepts for modular intralogistic systems (MIS) have been formulated, there is currently no research investigating their planning. In light of the existence of conflicting objectives and uncertainties, it is evident that conventional methodologies are unable to offer a satisfactory solution. The aim of this contribution is to develop a standardized planning procedure for MIS. The specific requirements for MIS in the chemical industry are translated into planning parameters by adapting Axiomatic Design in order to meet the specific requirements of MIS. To this end, the requirements of the company, the production site, the modular production, the sales market, and the suppliers are specified in design parameters for MIS on multiple occasions. In accordance with these requirements, the requisite intralogistic equipment can then be selected. The design parameters can be compared with existing intralogistic equipment, e.g., from a module database, using predefined attributes. On this foundation, planning processes for MIS are delineated. To exemplify the application, the planning procedure is applied to a use case from the industry. In conclusion, this planning procedure assists planners of MIS in selecting or developing the appropriate modules in accordance with their system requirements.
