The purpose of this literature review is to identify the benefits of palliative care for dialysis patients, difficulties and the importance of nursing professionals by associating them with the intensive care unit (ICU), even with the technology available to prolong life. . We analyzed 90 articles and selected 16, published between 2014-2020, in the Latin American and Caribbean Scientific and Technical Literature database - LILACS, Scientific Electronic Library Online - SCIELO. The inclusion criteria for the study were the use of articles that are available for all subjects in Portuguese, English and Spanish, which present the related theme on palliative nursing care related to dialysis patients in the ICU, and the difficulties found by the nursing team regarding this theme. The exclusion criteria were incomplete texts, articles that are not directly related to the theme presented and those that do not address research in the nursing area. and the importance of alleviating pain and taking care of suffering with symptoms related to the physical, spiritual, emotional and social state, providing assistance and compassion to the patient and family. Since nursing is the essence of its profession, nursing has a huge challenge: to highlight care, the prevalence of comfort and the balance between the physical, mental and spiritual dimensions of terminally ill patients, in view of all the technological apparatus available in the ICU environment.
