Analysis of basic learning skills of primary school students in Mozambique: an experience based on public and private schools in the city of Lichinga

The teaching and learning process in Mozambique takes place in public and private institutions. These education systems use the same textbooks. Despite this fact, the assimilation of content is quite different. Based on this situation, the article proposed to analyze the basic skills acquired by 3rd grade students in public and private schools in the city of Lichinga. Given this scenario, it was found that teachers in private schools have better teaching and learning conditions based on methodological diversification; students at private schools spend more time learning in their educational establishments; they demonstrated that they had acquired more skills compared to those in public education. These results were possible thanks to interviews and research carried out with teachers and students. For teachers, questions were related to methodological aspects of teaching and for students, solving Portuguese and Mathematics exercises. For future studies, gender studies recommended at the next levels of education.
