Energy and exergy analysis of complex gas turbines systems powered by a mixture of hydrogen and methane

Achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and addressing climate change while ensuring energy security requires a significant increase in renewable energy generation . The gas turbine industry has made strides in developing turbines capable of running entirely on 100% hydrogen by 2030. This research explores the efficiency and effectiveness of gas turbine configurations using hydrogen-methane mixtures, examining operational parameters and environmental factors. Four configurations were analysed: classical, compressor intercooling, regenerative, and inter-stage turbine burner. Through Aspen HYSYS modelling, the study enhances understanding of hybrid fuel utilization, particularly hydrogen-fuelled combustion, contributing to optimized SGT-100 turbine designs for sustainable energy goals. The research shows that increasing the hydrogen share in the methane-hydrogen mixture enhanced power output and efficiency. The highest efficiency (37.12%) was achieved in the regenerative gas turbine configuration, while the highest power output (7073 kW) was recorded in the inter-stage turbine burner configuration, both with a 100% (mass basis) hydrogen share in the methane-hydrogen fuel mixture. The highest exergy destruction was observed in the gas turbine's stoichiometric combustion chamber , with a decrease as hydrogen content increased. Other equipment showed minimal changes. These findings offer insights into the performance of hydrogen-methane fuelled gas turbines, aiding the transition to more efficient energy systems . • Studies of energy and exergy parameters in gas turbines powered by hydrogen-methane mixtures. • Optimization of performance of complex gas turbine systems. • Analysis of thermodynamic parameters in hydrogen-methane fuelled turbines across system configurations. • Investigation of exergy destruction in components of complex gas turbines.
