SOCIO-ECONOMIC CHALLENGES OF SLOVAK MIGRATION POLICY IN THE CONTEXT OF LABOR MARKET DEVELOPMENT

This study examines the socio-economic challenges of Slovak migration policy related to the labor market and the integration of third-country workers. Given Slovakia's aging population and persistent labor shortages in key economic sectors, the need for a well-structured migration policy has become increasingly important. The research assesses existing demographic trends, structural barriers to employment for migrant workers, and best practices from other EU countries that have successfully implemented policies to attract and retain foreign labor. This study uses a variety of methods, such as semi-structured interviews with migrant workers and a comparison of policy frameworks across the EU, to find important holes in Slovakia's migration strategy. Problems include complicated rules for getting a work permit, issues with recognizing foreign credentials, employers who prefer local workers, and not enough programs to help with integration like language classes and cultural orientations. Results of this research suggest that targeted migration policies can play a key role in solving labor shortages, supporting economic growth, and reducing demographic decline. Policies that simplify administrative procedures, improve foreign credential recognition, and expand integration support systems could significantly enhance Slovakia’s ability to attract and retain highly skilled workers. Moreover, creating a more inclusive labor market and strengthening anti-discrimination policies would encourage the long-term social and economic integration of migrants. This document gives suggestions for a better and longer-lasting migration framework based on what we know from working policy models in other EU member states. This will help Slovakia stay competitive in the growing European job market.
